How to plan an elopement in Mackay and the Whitsundays

So you've decided to elope. Or maybe you're still circling the idea, quietly wondering whether you can really skip the 100-person guest list, the seating chart and the price tag that comes with it.
Here's the good news: you can. And eloping today looks nothing like running off in secret. It's simply choosing a wedding that's about the two of you — intimate, unhurried, and set somewhere breathtaking. No stress, no savings account wiped out, just your love and the moment you've been waiting for.
This is your start-to-finish guide to planning an elopement across Mackay, Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. Work through it at your own pace — and remember, the whole point of how we do things is that you bring the love, and we do the rest.
First, what actually counts as an elopement?
These days, "elopement" just means a small, intentional wedding. For some couples that's truly just the two of them. For others it's a handful of their favourite people gathered on a beach. There's no rule about numbers — only that the day is stripped back to what matters most.
So as you read on, don't get hung up on the word. Whether you want a private moment for two or an intimate ceremony with fifteen of your nearest and dearest, it all fits.
Why Mackay and the Whitsundays?
Because few places in Australia give you this much variety in one region. In a single morning you could be married barefoot on a quiet beach, beneath heritage trees on a homestead, or on a working cattle farm by a creek.
We're spoilt for backdrops here — secluded beaches, tropical gardens, rural escapes and that famous North Queensland light. Step 1 | Decide who's coming
This is the first and easiest decision, and it shapes everything else. Picture your day:
Just the two of you — the most private option. You don't even need to bring witnesses; we can provide them.
A small handful — your closest few, up to four or eight people.
An intimate gathering — a slightly bigger circle, up to ten or fifteen guests at our styled venues.
Hold that picture in mind. It points you straight to the right package later on.
Step 2 | Choose your location
Half the joy of eloping here is the where. A few of our most-loved settings:
Beaches — So many gorgeous local beaches across Mackay & the Whitsundays for sand between your toes, or a lookout or beach-adjacent location if you love the ocean view without the sand.
Private rural properties — heritage homesteads, working farms and country gardens, with epic old trees, wide-open backdrops and often an undercover option if the weather has other ideas. Including Gather at Pelion, a secluded, 96-year-old family farm near Calen, all grazing cattle and sugar cane backdrops.
Ceremonies at Forest Grove — a beautifully styled private garden in the heart of Mackay.
Gardens and parks — Mackay Botanic Gardens, Queens Park, or pretty park spots around Airlie Beach.

Step 3 | Pick your time of year
North Queensland has two moods, and both can be magical:
The dry season (roughly May–October) is our premium wedding weather — warm, clear days, soft light and low humidity. It's the most popular window, so the best dates book out early.
The wet season (November–April) is greener, lusher and quieter, with the occasional tropical downpour. We simply lean on venues with undercover options (like Greenmount) so a passing shower never derails your day.
There's no wrong answer — just different beauty.

Step 4 | Sort the legal bits
We promise this part is far simpler than it sounds, and we walk you through all of it. The one thing worth knowing early: in Australia you need to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage with your celebrant at least one calendar month before your wedding date. So as soon as you have a date in mind, get in touch — the sooner that's lodged, the smoother everything else.

Step 5 | Choose your package
Once you know your guest count and your dream location, your package almost picks itself.
